Take a vacation, folks.  Yep, I’m on vacation after NOT writing, posting, doing pretty much anything for the blog for a couple months due to a crazy, crazy life.  Yeah, I’m not trying to make excuses, and I’m not trying to prove to you that I deserve a vacation.  What I am doing is asking you to consider taking some time to unwind, calm down, focus on your passions, evaluate, develop a plan, etc.  ”Fail to plan, plan to fail,” right?

Well, this vacation has been restful and sweet.  I look forward to getting back to blogging seriously over the next couple months and continuing to make 2010 “The Best Year of My Life.”

With all that said, enjoy a vacation, schedule a trip to relax, spend time with the fam, enjoy your spouse/relationship, take some alone time and think/meditate on what you’d love to do/accomplish.

Anyway, what a great interview! Rob Coats is such an amazing individual. Between his success as a student, small business owner and now a public speaker/mentor/author, this is a very accomplished man at the young age of 26 (27 in a couple days, April 2nd — say happy b-day when you get a chance!). In the interview, Rob touches on important aspects of success as a person as well as success as a business owner.

This more of a question for all of you because I’m very interested in your answers.  And I’m seriously asking this, Why Believe?  Why do we believe in anything, what’s the point?  In your opinion, why is it important or not important to believe?  Why believe in ourselves, a god, in others, in purposes and visions, and many other things we place belief in?

I’ve got some thoughts of my own, but I’m going to hold them back.  I had a great conversation with some guys today about belief.  I could tell many of them believed what I was saying about belief, that we can achieve whatever we set our minds to, but we have to believe it first.  BUT, some of them tuned me out.  So, I ask you, “Why Believe?”  Let’s hear it.

I was thinking today how important it is to fulfill some of your dreams.

• Do you dream of taking a cool vacation or seeing those mountains you’ve only envisioned in your thoughts or seen in pictures?
• Do you plan to plan to plan but would rather plan to take action?
• Do you think you’ll never get to fulfill your dreams?
• Have you written your dreams down?  Do you look at them often or think about them on a regular basis?

These are all important questions when you think about fulfilling dreams.  I keep using this example, but it’s crucial to use it to understand our ability and potential.  How did a man land and walk on the moon if not for some loon who thought it was possible?  Become a dreamer and shoot for the stars!  It’s certainly better to think and dream about your potential than to waste time being negative about your current state of affairs.

You’re an amazing miracle of a creature!  You need to know that you can do whatever it is you put your mind to!  Go ahead, put that dream trip on your calendar and start planning for it.  Go ahead, start dreaming big and stop being negative and watch your life change.

As I stand at the edge of great adventure and a deeper faith beckons me
I step forward, and then backward, filled with trepidation yet expectancy
For I know He is good, I know He is loving, and wants the best for me
Yet what will my task cost, how heavy the cross, will it involve loss?
But then I realize how much more the cost of the absence of a cross,
The adventure lost to constant calm and steady sea,
When although the waves may tumble and billow at times,
I’d see Him more clearly walking on the water beside me.
“Rest in me, fret not I say, feed on My faithfulness,
And I will take you where you have not dared to imagine
Fulfilling dreams that you have lost in doubt and busyness.”
Casting off fear and embracing the unknown, surrendering self to be free
For to know Him more deeply, to realize the hope He has planned for me
To embrace the adventure of loving Him lavishly,
Will be worth all cost, the weight of the cross, and paths followed blindly.
For I am the clay, He is the potter, and the purpose of this vessel only He can fully see and know-
And my greatest fear is refraining from using all He has given me,
To live a life mundane, safe, and at the bow
Of my own ship, sailing my own course, missing opportunities to fully know
The hope he has called me to, the power available, the full purpose of His design.
Oh, to know Him more deeply, to see Him more clearly, to live life so fully
That I stand on the other side, amazed where He has taken me,
seeing His careful plan
And realizing how close I was, how easy it would have been, to step away from the plate, and pursue a life of security
And miss out on the wonder, the joy and the splendor of His perfect plan for me.
So as I stand here on the edge of even greater adventure and deeper faith beckoning me
I close my eyes, reach out my hand, and say, ‘so, where are You taking me?’

OR- ‘so, what’s our next step to be?’

Oftentimes I wonder…there are many different people who live very quiet lives of faith all of their life…and then there are men like William Wilberforce who gave his life to his faith, taking leaps of faith that involved great sacrifice and hardship but accomplishing things he only dared dream possible.

I mention him because his story fascinates me and resonates in some ways.  He loved the simple things, and seemed to want to bask in them in many ways, bask in His Father. Yet, there was a life of passion and responsibility that drove him.

I feel a weight of responsibility to fulfill some things that have been placed before me, but often I just want to be in nature, soak up the simplicity of His wonder, take pictures, and write….leaving the work and toil of some of the other things behind.  But I don’t want to miss out on purpose and adventure that He may be beckoning me towards.  My greatest fear is to get to the end of my life and realize I took the easy way out, and didn’t use all He has given me, and missed out on some adventure due to unbelief and unwillingness to grip His hand and embrace the unknown…whatever that means.

Another Friday, another great interview.  Thanks to Alicia Hodges for coming on the show and allowing us to enjoy her wealth of knowledge and wisdom.  I enjoyed speaking with her and came away feeling refreshed and ready to keep working towards success.

Getting Ready to Get Ready

I don’t mean to go all ecclesiastical on you, but there is a time to get ready and there is a time to do. Do you stay up late dreaming up fantastic improvements to your company’s system that you just know will make the sales process easier and more profitable? Do you spread papers out all over your desk and make charts and 3 ring binders and laminate stuff?

Well while you were busy organizing your thoughts, re-ordering the process, laying out new sales flowcharts, and tweeting your ideas, the top producers in your company were out helping another dozen or so people get going in the business!

Guess what? Your top producers get ready. They probably take 4-8 hours once or twice a week to schedule their production time. But then that is where the game changes, THEY PRODUCE.  There is a time and place to dream up the next great idea, but not during production time. And when you are making what they are making, you’ll have the time and money to come up with ideas.

I bet if your company is even half as good as mine they have a beautifully simple plan to grow your business. The trouble is that you think it is too simple and you should probably add on a few things.

So let’s get practical. Schedule the following times during your week

1. Production time. This includes, networking, prospecting, presenting, selling and training.
2. Prep time. This includes schedule appointments, phone calls, and the like.
3. Followup time. This includes email, phone, or mail.
4. Idea time. This includes all of the stuff mentioned in the first paragraph.

I am willing to bet there is a specific person or department in your company whose task it is to gather and process new ideas. Feel free to keep them busy while you are busy producing.
